Little Ark Heritage Centre

Originally the Kilbaha National School, Halla Eoin was recently renovated to create a multi-purpose building which houses the Little Ark Heritage Centre.

Next door to the church in which stands the Little Ark itself, the Heritage Centre tells the whole story of the social, political and religious conflicts of 19th century Ireland, which led to the building of the Little Ark. This now fragile wooden structure has survived for over 150 years is testament to its significance in the history of Loop Head and its importance as a national treasure.

On a personal level, it is the story of two men – the Protestant landlord’s agent, Marcus Keane and the Catholic priest, Fr. Michael Meehan. One was responsible for post-Famine evictions on a brutal scale and refusing permission to build a church, and the other was determined to minister to his parishioners.

The story of the building as a school is also part of the display.
Entry is free. The Centre is run by volunteers and funded by donations, cards, and souvenir sales.

With a fully fitted kitchen, audio-visual system, WiFi, a large hall with a stage and fully accessible toilet facilities, the building is available for parties, events, workshops, performances, and more.
